Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey is a 1993 documentary about a man whose real life resembled a spy movie in many aspects. Born in the Soviet Union at the height of communist repression, Leon Theremin arose to become a pioneer of electronics and of electronic music. His most famous invention, the theremin, is a musical instrument that uses magnetic waves to infer where the player is holding their hands and translates their gestures into a rising, eerie musical tone that was the staple of many 1960s science fiction movie soundtracks. The film recounts his adventures as he attempted to promote his inventions and secure a safe life for his family.
