This touching George Cukor comedy starring Maggie Smith and Alec McCowen and based on the novel by Graham Greene is truly timeless. Quiet and unassuming Henry Pulling (McCowen) is surprised when his elderly and seemingly scatterbrained Aunt Augusta Bertram (Smith) claims that the woman who raised him and who he’s just had cremated wasn’t actually his biological mother. Visiting Augusta at her bohemian apartment Henry is introduced to her lover, Zachary Wordsworth, a substantially younger man and also a fortune teller. After receiving a mysterious and disturbing package, his aunt pulls Henry into a story of intrigue, kidnapping and true love. Little traveled, Henry is stunned to find that he must accompany her as she smuggles ransom money out of England to Turkey if wants to know the truth about his family and to keep his sweet but unscrupulous aunt out of jail. He meets a fascinating cast of characters on his travels including Tooley, a conflicted hippie, Augusta’s suspicious illegitimate son Gerome, the widow of one of her former lovers and her self-professed and ransomed true love, Ercole.
