The Farmer, His Son and the Donkey is a thoughtfully crafted episode of the famous show Aesop Fables. The episode portrays the story of a farmer, his son, and their pet donkey. The story begins with the two making a journey from their village to the market town, with the donkey, to sell it.
As they're traveling, they come across a group of people who start to judge and criticize the farmer, loudly exclaiming that he's foolish for walking next to the donkey while his young son rides it. The farmer, who is not bothered by the criticism, asks his son to ride the donkey instead, while he walks. However, as they travel further, they meet another group of people who judge the farmer for not riding the donkey and carrying his son, saying that he's lazy and should do more to protect his son.
As a result, the farmer picks up his son and they both ride the donkey together, much to the amusement of yet another group of people they encounter who mock them for overloading the donkey.
Unsure of what to do, the farmer decides to get off the donkey and walk, while his son rides it alone. But as they continue on their journey, a fourth group of people criticizes the farmer once again for letting his young son ride the donkey alone, saying that it's abusive and wrong.
After finally reaching the market town, the farmer, feeling guilty and ashamed, decides to sell the donkey. The once proud and self-assured farmer eventually catered to the opinions of others, and lost out on making a good sale at the market, as he had nothing to sell.
The Farmer, His Son, and the Donkey episode of Aesop Fables, depicts the pitfalls of catering to opinions of others while ignoring what you know to be best. It highlights how you're often doomed to fail by trying to please everyone, in a bid to be the good guy.
