From the towering pyramids of Giza to the sprawling aqueducts of Rome, civilizations throughout the ancient world built some of the most impressive structures in human history. But how did they do it without modern technology and engineering tools? In season 2 episode 7 of Ancient Engineering, titled "Extreme Buildings," we delve into the construction of some of the most impressive and challenging structures from the ancient world.

First up, we explore the jaw-dropping cliffside monasteries of Meteora in Greece. Built by monks in the 14th century, these gravity-defying structures were constructed atop 400-foot-tall rock formations that are almost impossible to access. Using ropes, pulleys, and sheer determination, the monks were able to transport the necessary building materials up the cliff face and construct these incredible buildings.

Next, we head to Cambodia to examine the engineering feats of the 12th-century temple complex of Angkor Wat. This massive complex covers more than 400 acres and was constructed over the course of 30 years using an intricate system of canals and reservoirs. We'll learn how the builders were able to stabilize the massive structures and prevent them from sinking into the soft soil beneath.

Moving on to South America, we explore the mysterious Nazca Lines in Peru. These massive geoglyphs were created by removing the oxidized iron rocks from the surface of the desert to reveal the lighter-colored soil underneath. The lines depict animals, plants, and geometric shapes, and are so large that they can only be fully appreciated from the air. We'll examine how the Nazca people were able to create such precise and intricate designs without the use of modern surveying tools.

Our final stop is the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. This beautiful city was carved directly into the sandstone cliffs by the Nabateans more than 2,000 years ago. We'll investigate the engineering techniques that were used to construct the elaborate facades, towering columns, and intricate water supply systems that made life in Petra possible.

Throughout "Extreme Buildings," we will see how ancient engineers were able to harness the natural forces around them to create structures that stand the test of time. By using simple machines, clever construction techniques, and a deep understanding of the surrounding environment, they were able to create some of the most impressive and awe-inspiring structures in human history.
