The cult classic YouTube series, Angry Video Game Nerd, is back with the eleventh season and the third episode titled Planet of the Apes. This time, the Nerd is diving into the world of licensed video games based on the popular sci-fi franchise.

The episode begins with the Nerd, as always, seated in front of his television, ready to tackle the games at hand. He provides a brief background on the Planet of the Apes franchise, but quickly dives into the games. The first one he tackles is the original Planet of the Apes game for the Atari 2600.

The Nerd explains that the game was released in 1983, several years after the original film's release. He begins to play the game, which starts with a black screen and no instructions. The game's graphics are basic, even for the time, consisting of a rudimentary stick figure ape and the Nerd's character, who he describes as looking like an "orange sperm."

As he plays, the Nerd begins to discover the frustrating and nonsensical gameplay mechanics that make the game nearly unplayable. He points out inconsistencies in the game's enemy stats and comments on the game's complete lack of a save or checkpoint system. The Nerd also struggles with controlling his character and the game's poor hit detection.

The next game he tackles is the Planet of the Apes game for the Game Boy Color. The Nerd notes that this game is a direct adaptation of the Tim Burton-directed film of the same name, which wasn't particularly well-received at the time of its release.

The graphics, he comments, are much better than the Atari game, but it doesn't help with the gameplay - the controls are clunky and the music is repetitive and irritating. He found that the game was filled with irritating mechanics like falling and getting stuck, to the point where he found the game to be unplayable after a short amount of time.

The third game he played was the Planet of the Apes game for the PlayStation 1. The Nerd comments on the game's opening, which features a live-action intro that he found to be slightly unnerving. The game itself, he states, is reminiscent of Resident Evil-style gameplay with tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds.

The Nerd has a lot to say about the game and its various mechanics, pointing out some bizarre features like a "banana pistol" that players are given. He found that the game also had a ton of cutscenes, many of which he couldn't skip, which made the pacing of the game painfully slow. The Nerd says that he ultimately found the game to be decent overall but with some significant shortfalls.

Finally, the Nerd tackles the Planet of the Apes game for Xbox and PlayStation 2, developed by Visiware Studios. He begins by commenting on the size of the game's instruction manual, which is over 100 pages long.

The game follows a similar gameplay style to the PlayStation game but has some significant improvements, such as the ability to skip cutscenes. However, the Nerd found that the game was still cluttered with unnecessary gameplay mechanics, including a "stance" system that he describes as being "ridiculous."

The Nerd ends the episode by summarizing his thoughts on the various Planet of the Apes games he played. He found that each game had its own strengths and weaknesses, and none of them were particularly great. In a classic Nerd moment, he throws all of the games he played into a trash can, signifying their complete lack of usefulness or playability.

Overall, Angry Video Game Nerd's Planet of the Apes episode is another entertaining and informative dive into the world of terrible licensed video games. Fans of the series won't be disappointed by this latest installment.
