The Angry Video Game Nerd is back and in this season 3 episode 9 he's taking on the classic Superman game for the Nintendo 64. Yes, that's right folks, we're talking about the infamous Superman 64. If you've never played this game, count yourself lucky. It's widely regarded as one of the worst games of all time.
The Nerd starts off by giving some background on Superman and his various forms of media throughout the years. He even takes a moment to point out how bad some of the Superman movies were. But the focus of this episode is on the video game, and the Nerd is not optimistic about what he's about to experience.
He starts up the game and immediately comments on the terrible graphics. The game looks like it's made of polygons and the textures are all stretched out. The controls are clunky and unintuitive, something that becomes painfully clear as the Nerd tries to fly through some rings in the opening level.
The Nerd quickly discovers that the game is full of glitches and bugs. Some of them are minor, like clipping through walls or falling through the ground. But others are so bad that they completely break the game. At one point, the Nerd tries to pick up a car but instead of grabbing it, he just starts flying around with it. He eventually drops the car, but it gets stuck in midair and just starts spinning around.
Superman 64 is not just bad, it's frustratingly bad. The game is full of tedious tasks that have to be completed in order to progress. The Nerd spends a good amount of time trying to put out fires in a building, but the controls are so awkward that it's almost impossible. There's also a race against another flying character that's just as frustrating. The Nerd has a hard time even making it through the rings, let alone beating his opponent.
The Nerd takes a moment to talk about the game's story, or lack thereof. The game's opening cutscene is nothing but text on a black screen, and it's not even grammatically correct. The story doesn't get any better from there. The Nerd has no idea what's going on, and he's not sure the game does either.
One of the most frustrating things about Superman 64 is the camera. It's completely fixed, meaning that the player can't control it at all. This becomes a problem when flying through tight spaces or trying to make precise jumps. The Nerd spends a lot of time complaining about the camera, and it's easy to see why.
Despite all of its flaws, the Nerd keeps playing the game. He eventually makes it to the end, but not without a lot of frustration and rage. The final boss of the game is particularly bad, and the Nerd has a hard time figuring out what to do. When he finally beats the boss and finishes the game, he lets out a cheer of relief.
The Nerd ends the episode by talking about how bad Superman 64 is. He doesn't recommend playing it, even for the novelty of experiencing one of the worst games of all time. He does, however, recommend watching his video about it. His commentary is hilarious, and it's almost worth suffering through the game just to hear him rant about it.
Overall, this episode of Angry Video Game Nerd is a fun and entertaining look at one of the worst games ever made. The Nerd's commentary is spot-on, and his frustration with the game is palpable. If you're a fan of the show or just enjoy watching people suffer through bad video games, this episode is definitely worth a watch.
