In the fifth episode of season 2 of Asian Provocateur, titled "5. Uncle Ragu Returns," comedian Romesh Ranganathan returns to his birthplace in Sri Lanka with his eccentric Uncle Ragu. The episode starts with Romesh and his uncle arriving at their final destination: the house where Ragu was born. As they walk around the neighborhood, Ragu reminisces about his childhood memories.
The pair then heads to Kandy, where they visit the Temple of the Tooth, a highly revered Buddhist site. Ragu gets carried away with his jokes and antics while they explore the temple, much to Romesh's embarrassment.
Next, they head to the botanical gardens in Peradeniya, where Ragu insisted on bringing boxes of his homemade pickles to give to the gardeners. He also tries to teach Romesh how to play cricket, much to Romesh's dismay.
After their adventures in Kandy, they visit the coastal town of Galle, where they visit a turtle sanctuary. Romesh learns that many turtles are endangered and how the sanctuary is working to protect them. Ragu, of course, makes some inappropriate jokes to the turtle guide, leaving Romesh feeling mortified once again.
They also visit the Galle Fort, an old Dutch fortress where they run into a group of tourists. Ragu, with his outgoing personality, strikes up a conversation with the tourists and invites them to Romesh's comedy show later that night. Romesh is not too keen on this idea, but plays along anyways.
The episode concludes with Romesh performing at a comedy club in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. The tourists Ragu invited to the show end up in the audience, and Romesh worries about how they will react to his jokes. However, the crowd ends up loving his set, and Ragu is over the moon with excitement. The episode ends with a heartfelt moment as Romesh and Ragu reflect on their journey together.
Overall, "5. Uncle Ragu Returns" is a lighthearted and comedic episode that showcases the dynamic between Romesh and his uncle. Ragu's quirky behavior and Romesh's exasperation make for a hilarious dynamic. Additionally, viewers get a glimpse into the culture and sights of Sri Lanka, making for an entertaining and educational episode.
