Cold Case Files Classic Season 3 Episode 6 The Killer's Tattoo

  • February 9, 2004

In Cold Case Files Classic season 3 episode 6 titled "The Killer's Tattoo," viewers are taken through an intense investigation into the murder of a young woman named Kelly Eckart. The small town of Girard, Ohio is rocked by the senseless killing of this 18-year-old girl, but despite an initial investigation and several leads, the case goes cold and remains unsolved for years.

Kelly was last seen leaving a friend's house on the night of September 14th, 1984. Her body was discovered the next day, brutally beaten, raped, and strangled. With no witnesses to the crime and no immediate suspects, police were left scrambling for leads and didn't make much progress for several years.

It wasn't until 1993 that a promising new lead emerged, in the form of a man named Joseph Hall. Hall was serving a 30-year prison sentence for the rape and murder of an Ohio woman, and had recently been talking to authorities about other unsolved cases that he may have been involved in. He claimed to have information about Kelly Eckart's murder, and offered to share it in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Investigators were skeptical at first, viewing Hall as a self-serving criminal looking to manipulate the system. But as they pressed him for more details about the case, they began to realize that he may actually be telling the truth. Hall claimed that he had seen Kelly's killer at a party just hours before the murder, and that the man had a distinctive tattoo on his forearm of a flame and a skull.

For the investigators, this was a major break in the case. They had never heard of anyone with this tattoo before, and immediately put out a call to their contacts in law enforcement across the country to see if anyone knew of a suspect with this particular ink.

The search was long and frustrating, as there were reportedly many people with tattoos matching this description. But eventually, the investigators were able to narrow down their search to a few key suspects in the Girard area, and began to gather DNA evidence from their potential murder suspects.

Several more months passed before forensic tests finally gave them the break that they needed - one suspect's DNA was found to have been on Kelly Eckhart's body at the time of her murder. The man's name was Michael Keenan, and he was a 32-year-old with a long history of criminal activity including robbery, drug trafficking, and assault.

With this new evidence, investigators were able to obtain a warrant for Keenan's arrest, and he was ultimately found guilty of the murder of Kelly Eckhart. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Despite the closure that finally came with Michael Keenan's conviction, the episode leaves viewers with a sense of sadness, as it becomes clear that no amount of punishment or jail time can ever undo the senseless violence that Kelly Eckhart endured. Nonetheless, the tireless efforts of the investigators and forensic teams who worked to bring her killer to justice serve as a testament to the power of persistence and determination in fighting crime and supporting the families of victims.
