Cyanide & Happiness Shorts is a web cartoon series that captures different scenarios in a satirical and dark humor form. The show is animated with stick figures, and each episode typically runs for about a minute and a half. In season 1, episode 10 of Cyanide & Happiness Shorts, titled "Divorce," viewers are treated to yet another comical, albeit dark, situation.
The episode begins with a man in a lawyer's office, sitting across from his wife while an attorney signifies his terms of separation. The couple had recently gotten married, but things had gone south quickly. The husband is eager to leave the relationship and asks, "What's mine is mine, and what's hers is hers, right?" The attorney responds with an affirmative nod, and the couple seems to have reached a mutual agreement.
However, things take a turn when the attorney then asks about the couple's fortune teller and psychic readings. The couple reveals that they have always been using their fortune teller's predictions as a guide throughout the relationship. This is when we learn that their psychic also happens to be one of the lawyers at that firm. After some deliberation, the psychic/lawyer has a new proposal– she suggests that the couple should split everything right down the middle to avoid any potential bad karma. The couple agrees to this, thinking that one less source of negativity in their lives would be a good thing.
With the lawyer's reminder that the agreement is binding, the couple shakes hands and goes their separate ways. However, things take an unexpected turn when the couple is seen fighting over an egg. They do not want to break the egg as this could be bad for their karma. In the end, they are forced to spill the contents of the egg, which turns out to be a well-aged fortune cookie with a harshly worded fortune inside. The couple is visibly distraught as they realize that their agreement and subsequent take on karma is not working out.
Despite the short run-time, episode 10 of season 1 of "Cyanide & Happiness Shorts," aptly titled "Divorce," encapsulates the type of humor and sardonic tone that has made the show a favorite for many viewers. The episode points to the lengths that humans will go to convince themselves that they are avoiding bad omens, even if it means breaking a raw egg or facing the consequences of a fortune cookie. The concluding punchline at the end drives the point home and leaves the viewer both laughing at the absurdity of the situation and pondering the human psyche's idiosyncrasies.
