In Cyanide & Happiness Shorts season 1 episode 3, titled "Flight Safety," viewers get treated to a hilarious animation that explores a common fear: flying! In particular, the episode follows a group of airplane passengers, all of whom desperately want to find out how to stay safe during their journey.
Of course, as with all episodes of Cyanide & Happiness, the answer is anything but straightforward!
As the passengers board the plane, they are handed some pamphlets that outline basic safety precautions. However, things soon take a turn for the ridiculous, as the passengers start asking more and more elaborate questions about staying safe in the air. Before long, they are debating the merits of duct taping the wings shut, wearing body armor, and using their own urine to put out a fire.
The humor here is often over-the-top and absurd, with a lot of sight gags and slapstick comedy. However, there are also moments of real wit and cleverness, as the different characters bounce off of one another and make increasingly outlandish suggestions. It's clear that the writers and animators had a lot of fun coming up with this episode, and it's hard not to enjoy the ride along with them.
Perhaps the greatest strength of "Flight Safety" is its ability to poke fun at our collective fears and anxieties, while also acknowledging that those fears are often irrational and unhelpful. The characters in the episode are all trying so hard to be safe that they end up making things worse for themselves, and the humor comes from watching them spiral out of control. Ultimately, the message seems to be that sometimes it's best to just sit back and enjoy the ride, regardless of what might happen.
Overall, "Flight Safety" is a great example of the kind of dark, irreverent humor that Cyanide & Happiness is known for. If you're a fan of the show, or just enjoy absurd and twisted comedy, then this episode is definitely worth a watch.
