Dinner with the Folks is the eighteenth episode of the fifth season of Cyanide & Happiness Shorts. In this episode, we see a young man named Tim heading out to dinner with his girlfriend, Sarah, and her parents. Tim is understandably nervous for the dinner, as Sarah's dad is known to be a bit intense.
As they arrive at the restaurant, Tim begins to feel more and more anxious. He orders a drink to calm his nerves, but as he sips it, his hand begins to shake uncontrollably. When they're seated at the table, Sarah's dad begins to grill Tim about his job, his family, and his intentions with Sarah.
Tim tries to answer politely, but he can feel himself starting to panic. Sarah's mom tries to lighten the mood by asking about Tim's hobbies, but he only manages to stammer out a few words before excusing himself to go to the bathroom.
Once he's alone, Tim splashes water on his face and tries to calm down. He looks around the bathroom for something to help him, and his eyes fall on a bottle of cyanide. Without thinking, Tim chugs the entire bottle.
He staggers back to the table, feeling dazed and lightheaded. Sarah's parents are horrified, and Sarah is frantically calling for an ambulance. But as Tim's vision blurs and he starts to lose consciousness, he realizes that he's not dying – he's transforming.
In a flash of light, Tim becomes a beautiful, sparkly unicorn. He shakes his mane and prances around the restaurant, giggling with delight. Sarah's family is shocked and amazed, but Sarah seems unfazed by the transformation.
As the unicorn-Tim continues to frolic, Sarah explains that this sort of thing happens to Tim all the time. He's managed to keep it a secret so far, but now that he's out in the open, he can finally live his truth.
The episode ends with the unicorn-Tim and Sarah's family heading out into the night, with Tim happily skipping ahead and Sarah's parents trying to keep up.
Overall, Dinner with the Folks is a typical Cyanide & Happiness episode, with a dark humor twist. It takes an uncomfortable situation (a tense dinner with the girlfriend's parents) and turns it on its head by introducing a magical transformation. The episode is short and snappy, with fast-paced dialogue and sharp jokes. Fans of the C&H universe will enjoy the absurdity of seeing a man turn into a unicorn, and the way in which the other characters react to it. If you're looking for a quick, irreverent laugh, Dinner with the Folks is a great choice.
