Dinner with Racers is a show that follows two friends, Ryan Eversley and Sean Heckman, as they travel across the United States on a Road trip to meet various racers and talk about their careers and lives in racing. Season 1 episode 2 is titled Smokey.
In this episode, Ryan and Sean travel to Mooresville, North Carolina, to visit with legendary NASCAR mechanic and engine builder, Ray Fox, who was best known in the racing world as "Smokey." Ryan and Sean are excited to chat with Smokey as they are huge fans of the NASCAR legend and are eager to hear his stories from his time working on cars in the 1940s-1970s.
Smokey was one of the most innovative mechanics of his time, constantly challenging the status quo. A lifelong racer, Smokey started his career racing motorcycles before moving on to cars. His innovative ideas and concepts paved the way for modern racing engines. He was responsible for building some of NASCAR's most notable engines, including the Daytona 500-winning engine in 1960. His methods earned him the nickname “Doctor” and he was one of the most respected and feared engine builders in the sport.
As the guys sit down to dinner with Smokey, the conversation quickly turns to racing and his early days working in the garage. Smokey shares stories of his first race at the Daytona Beach course, where he blew a piston and the car was engulfed in flames. They talk about the time he built a boat and raced it across Lake Dora in Central Florida, cutting his neighbor’s dock in half in the process. Smokey also discusses his innovative approach to building engines, using unconventional methods to gain a competitive edge.
In addition to his success in NASCAR, Smokey was instrumental in developing engines for IndyCar racing and his work eventually led to Johnny Rutherford's 1974 Indy 500 win. Ryan and Sean are impressed with Smokey's wealth of knowledge and how he has impacted racing over the years. They are also impressed with the fact that he’s still quick-witted and sharp as a tack at 95 years old.
As the meal progresses, the conversation turns to some of the more controversial moments in Smokey's career. Smokey tells the story of the time he was disqualified from a race for having an "illegal" oil filter. He argues that there was nothing illegal about the filter, but he was a victim of politics in NASCAR. Smokey also discusses the controversial 1967 Daytona 500, where he was ordered off the track by NASCAR officials for a suspected illegal fuel tank. Smokey claims that he had done nothing wrong and to this day, some argue that he was unfairly targeted.
Throughout the episode, Ryan and Sean are like two kids in a candy store, soaking up all of the racing knowledge that Smokey has to offer. They are both humbled by the opportunity to chat with one of the most respected figures in motorsports history. As they wrap up the meal, Smokey shares his thoughts on the current state of racing and how technology has changed the sport over the years. He makes it clear that no matter how far technology advances, the driver is ultimately the one responsible for the win.
Overall, Dinner with Racers season 1 episode 2 Smokey is an entertaining and informative episode that showcases the life and legacy of one of the most important figures in the history of motorsports. If you're a racing fan, this is a must-watch episode.
