How many times have you looked at toothpaste commercials and wondered if they really do what they claim to do? In season 4, episode 15 of Honest Ads, the team takes a closer look at this all-too-common marketing tactic and asks the question: If toothpaste commercials were honest, what would they really say?
As usual, the episode opens with the signature Honest Ads intro, this time featuring a smiling man brushing his teeth in the mirror. But instead of the usual upbeat music and flashy graphics, we hear a voiceover that sets the tone for the rest of the episode: "Are you tired of brushing your teeth day after day, only to see no real improvement in your smile? Us too. Introducing: toothpaste ads that tell it like it is."
From there, we're treated to a series of hilarious and painfully truthful toothpaste ads. First up is a commercial for a brand that promises to "whiten your teeth in just one week!" But instead of showing a model with a dazzling Hollywood smile, we see a regular guy who's barely seeing any improvement after seven days of use. "Honestly, it's probably your diet," the voiceover quips.
Next, we're treated to a mockumentary-style ad for a "natural" toothpaste brand that claims to be free of all the harmful chemicals found in traditional toothpaste. But when the actor playing the brand spokesperson accidentally swallows some of the toothpaste during filming, chaos ensues. "Okay, so maybe it's not perfect," the ad admits.
The episode then takes a turn towards the absurd with a commercial for a toothpaste brand that claims to be "organic." But instead of a tube of toothpaste, we see a farmer brushing his teeth with a bunch of carrots. "Hey, it's organic," the farmer grins.
Things get a bit more serious (but still hilarious) with an ad for a toothpaste that promises to "strengthen your enamel." But instead of showing a model with rock-solid teeth, we see an actor playing a dentist who reveals the ugly truth about what really damages our enamel: "It's your diet, okay? Lay off the sugar."
Finally, the episode ends with a send-up of all those toothpaste commercials that claim to "fight cavities." In the ad, we see a woman brushing her teeth after every meal and flossing religiously...only to find out she has two cavities at her next dentist appointment. "Well, at least I have fresh breath," she sighs.
Overall, If Toothpaste Commercials Were Honest is a hilarious and eye-opening look at the toothpaste industry and the marketing tactics they use to sell their products. By stripping away all the hype and glitter, Honest Ads reminds us that sometimes the truth is just as effective (and much funnier) than any slick ad campaign.
