Library Wars is a Japanese anime series that brilliantly marks the romance genre with a touch of adventure and action. The first episode of season one, "My Prince Charming is in the LDF," presents a breathtaking beginning to the anime presented by the Production I.G. animation studio.
The show is set in an alternate dystopian future, wherein the government decides to censor all the books that they perceive could corrupt the minds of people. In retaliation to this, a group of citizens, commonly known as the Library Defense Force (LDF), is formed, who swear to protect the freedom of speech and the right to knowledge. The series portrays the daily lives of the LDF members, who are constantly under the government's scrutiny and how they work together to maintain peace while combating against government forces.
The episode opens up with a young, energetic girl named Kasahara Iku (voiced by Marina Inoue) energetically running across the city streets. She is excited to finally join the LDF and realizes that she is running late. Iku is unable to find her way to the library and frantically asks for directions from a passerby. She eventually finds the library where she is greeted by her superior and mentor, Instructor Dojo (voiced by Tomoaki Maeno). Iku is awestruck by his commanding presence and calm demeanor.
The initial part of the episode follows Iku's induction into the library defense force. She is taken to the training grounds where she meets her fellow recruits and co-officers of the force. Her introduction to them is not quite smooth as she ends up getting targeted by one of the senior officers. But Iku is determined to prove herself worthy of being a part of the team.
During her training, Iku discovers that her crush from high school, Tezuka Hikaru (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki), is already a member of the force. She is thrilled to see him but also worried that he might not remember her. However, luck seems to favor her as Hikaru recognizes her instantly, which makes her ecstatic.
The entire episode centers around Iku's training and the tasks assigned to her. Dojo, her coach, is a stern officer who believes in training hard to produce the best results. He gives her plenty of duties, ranging from organizing books to physical workouts and mock battles.
The show does an outstanding job of presenting how the library defense force operates in a world where the government can take away their rights. It is a dystopian future where the people's right to knowledge is constantly under threat. At the same time, the show effectively portrays the LDF's mission to safeguard the freedom of speech and knowledge.
The animation and character designs are impeccable, giving the show a more realistic feel. The voice acting is fantastic, with each character's voice fitting their respective roles to perfection. The sound effects and the background score synchronize well with the storyline.
In conclusion, the first episode of Library Wars season one, "My Prince Charming is in the LDF," sets the stage for a visually stunning, entertaining show that has all the elements of a romance, adventure, and action series. It is an enthralling start to what promises to be an exciting ride filled with drama, romance, and action. The anime does a great job of introducing all the main characters and the premise of the story. In a world where censorship and information control could be a reality, a series like Library Wars is refreshing and thought-provoking.
