Ep 3. Spetses/Hydra

In My Greek Odyssey season 1 episode 3, titled Spetses/Hydra, host Peter Maneas visits two stunning islands in the Saronic Gulf: Spetses and Hydra.

The episode begins with Peter arriving in Spetses by ferry and taking a stroll around the picturesque town, admiring the traditional architecture and learning about the island's rich history. He then heads to the Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses, which was founded in the early 20th century and has become a hub for cultural exchange and education. Peter meets with the school's director, who gives him a tour and explains the school's mission to promote cross-cultural understanding and social responsibility.

Next, Peter heads to the beach to meet up with a local fisherman and learn about sustainable fishing practices. He joins the fisherman on his boat and helps him pull in his catch of the day, which includes various types of fish and octopus. Peter then takes the fish to a nearby taverna, where the chef prepares them in traditional Spetsiotiko style and serves them up with fresh Greek salad and local wine.

After enjoying the delicious meal, Peter takes a bike ride around the island, stopping at a few different spots to take in the beautiful scenery and learn more about the island's history. He visits the house of famous Greek novelist and poet Nikos Kazantzakis, who spent several summers on Spetses and wrote some of his most famous works there. Peter then heads to the island's historic lighthouse, which offers stunning views of the surrounding sea and coastline.

The second part of the episode takes place on the nearby island of Hydra, which is known for its idyllic beaches and artistic community. Peter begins by exploring the town's narrow cobblestone streets and admiring the beautiful architecture, which is largely preserved from the 18th and 19th centuries. He then visits the home and studio of a local artist, who creates beautiful paintings inspired by the island's natural beauty.

Next, Peter takes a ride on a traditional wooden boat called a kaiki, which is commonly used for transportation around the island. He enjoys the smooth ride along the crystal-clear water and takes in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the island's rocky cliffs and secluded coves. He stops at one of the island's most famous beaches, Vlychos, and takes a swim in the refreshing water.

Peter then visits a local workshop where traditional Greek musical instruments are handmade. He learns about the different types of instruments and watches as the craftsmen carefully carve and shape the wood to create beautiful guitars and bouzoukis. He also has the chance to play a few songs with a local musician and experience the unique sound of Greek music firsthand.

The episode concludes with Peter taking a walk up to the island's highest point, where he finds a beautiful monastery and takes in the panoramic view of the entire island. He reflects on the beauty and tranquility of these two remarkable islands and their rich cultural heritage, and looks forward to continuing his journey through Greece.
