As the eighth episode of season one of My Greek Odyssey, Kythira/Antikythira follows the show's host, Peter Maneas, as he explores these two lesser-known Grecian islands.
Starting on Antikythira, Peter learns about the island's fascinating history as the location of the world's first analogue computer, the Antikythera Mechanism, before hopping on a boat to Kythira. Once on Kythira, Peter is immediately struck by the island's beauty. With its rugged coastline, clear blue waters, and unspoiled countryside, Kythira offers a peaceful escape from the more touristy Greek destinations.
Throughout the episode, Peter takes part in a variety of activities, including diving into the waters surrounding Antikythira, where he discovers an underwater cave system. He also visits a Kytheran beekeeper and learns about the island's unique, aromatic thyme, which he then uses to cook a traditional Greek dish.
One of the highlights of the episode is when Peter visits the Venetian fortress in Kythira's capital, Chora. He is guided by the passionate Vasilis Kythreotis, who shares his vast knowledge of the fortress's fascinating history. Later, Peter meets up with Vasilis at the nearby Ottoman citadel and is amazed to see the stark contrast between the two fortifications.
The episode also explores Kythira's culture and traditions. Peter visits a local pottery maker, who demonstrates how he creates beautiful, traditional Kytheran ceramics by hand. Later on, Peter attends a Kytheran wedding and immerses himself in the joyful celebrations, including traditional music and dancing.
As always, the episode is rounded out by Peter's interactions with the locals. From sharing a meal with a fisherman and his family to joining a group of young Kytherans for a game of street soccer, Peter embraces the island's welcoming and laid-back vibe.
Throughout Kythira/Antikythira, My Greek Odyssey captures the essence of these two idyllic, off-the-beaten-path Greek destinations. With its emphasis on local culture, traditions, and history, the episode showcases the beauty and diversity of the Greek islands beyond the more well-known tourist hotspots.
