My Greek Odyssey season 2 episode 12, titled Milos, follows the show's host and presenter, Peter Maneas, as he explores the less known region of Milos, Greece.
Milos is a volcanic island, located on the southwestern edge of the Cyclades island group, and is the fifth largest island in the group. With its rich history and stunning landscapes, Milos has much to offer to local and international guests alike.
The episode begins with Peter disembarking from his boat and stepping onto the island. He is immediately taken aback by the whitewashed buildings, vivid blue skies, and deep blue sea. The viewer is swept away by the beauty of Milos and the warm welcome extended by the locals.
Peter begins his adventure by visiting the ancient ruins of Filakopi. In this old city, located on the coast, Peter learns about the importance of the site as it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1570 BC and then rebuilt using new architectural styles. Moving on, Peter visits the catacombs of Milos. Once an important Early Christian and Byzantine cemetery, the catacombs were later turned into a place of worship during the early Christian era. Today, they stand as a testament to the island's religious history.
The next stop for Peter is the picturesque village of Klima, a traditional fishing village with colorful houses built directly into the rock with their boat garages located on the ground floor. He strolls around the charming village, meeting with friendly residents and learning how they live. He is given a warm welcome by Klima's fishermen and enjoys a delicious lunch with fresh seafood, cooked by his host in the traditional way.
Peter continues his journey by embarking on a boat tour around Milos's coastline. His guide takes him to the island's highlights, including the volcanic rocks of the Sarakiniko beach, the jagged cliffs of Firligos, the eerie lunar landscape of Pallakida, and the breathtakingly beautiful Kleftiko Bay with its turquoise blue waters.
Throughout his journey, Peter encounters the traditional cuisine of Milos, including the island's famous cheese known as the "Milo's Yellow Cheese," locally produced wines, and other traditional dishes made from local ingredients. His delightful culinary experiences include a small, family-owned cheese factory, local bakeries with their famous sesame rings, and the local market for a wonderful selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.
As the episode draws to a close, Peter reflects on his journey to Milos and what he's learned about the island and its people. He is visibly touched by the warm hospitality that has been extended to him, and he can't help but feel that Milos is an island that has been overlooked for too long.
The episode ends with Peter enjoying a stunning sunset, reflecting on the natural beauty of Milos, as well as its rich history and welcoming people. His journey to the island has been an eye-opener, and he looks forward to sharing the island's unique culture and lifestyle with the wider world through his show and beyond.
