Osomatsu-kun is a 1980s anime show centered around the misadventures of the Matsuno sextuplets – Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu, and Todomatsu. This classic show has gained a cult following over the years for its humor and absurdity.
In episode 41 of season 1, the episode starts with the Matsuno sextuplets participating in a local race. The winner of the race will receive a grand prize of 1000 yen. As expected, the sextuplets are not exactly fit, so they stumble and fall mid-race, losing their chances of winning. While they’re disappointed, they attempt to make the best of a bad situation and go to a cafe to drown their sorrows in some snacks instead.
At the cafe, they come across a board with a notice for an audition for a TV show. The sextuplets are immediately excited and see this as an opportunity for them to become famous and leave their poor living conditions. They make a group decision to audition as a group for the show – a talent competition run by a famous variety show host named Mr. Yoshida.
At the audition, the boys are nervous and jittery. As soon as they start performing, however, things take an unexpected turn. Mr. Yoshida realizes that all of the sextuplets are so untalented that they’re actually kind of funny. Their whole performance is so bad that it somehow works in their favor and Yoshida invites the sextuplets to appear on his variety show.
The sextuplets are thrilled at their newfound fame, but they quickly realize that there’s much more to being on a TV show than just showing up and performing. They need to prepare for it like they’ve never done before. They need to learn how to speak properly, how to move properly, and even how to dress properly.
The sextuplets take this very seriously, and they all try to improve their skills in preparation for the big day. For instance, Osomatsu practices speaking in dialects, Choromatsu perfects his dance moves, Ichimatsu learns how to sing on key, Karamatsu takes up playing the guitar, Jyushimatsu is trained to speak slowly, and Todomatsu is put in charge of their outfits.
After weeks of intense training, the big day finally arrives. The sextuplets get ready backstage, and they see a few other performers – who are all much more talented than they are – also gearing up to perform. But despite the stiff competition, the sextuplets are surprisingly calm and confident.
When it’s their turn to perform, the sextuplets head onto the stage to rapturous applause. They start performing their routine, and it’s just as bad as it was at the audition. However, they quickly see that their bad performances are actually successful when the audience starts laughing and applauding them. Mr. Yoshida had been right all along – there’s something inherently funny about the Matsuno sextuplets' lack of talent that makes them incredibly endearing.
As the sextuplets walk off the stage, they can hardly contain their excitement. They’ve made it! They’re finally famous! They can leave their poor living conditions behind and live in luxury! However, Mr. Yoshida drops a bombshell on them – their appearances on the show weren’t a paid gig. They’ve actually been duped into working for free.
Initially, the sextuplets are devastated. Their dreams of fame and fortune have been crushed. However, Mr. Yoshida gives them one final piece of advice that cheers them up. He tells the sextuplets that while they may not have been paid in money, they’ve been paid in something much more valuable – the chance to entertain people and make them laugh. The sextuplets are overjoyed at this realization and vow to keep on making people smile, no matter what.
