Race Across The World Season 1 Episode 5 Huangyao to Koh Rong
- March 15, 2021
As teams have reached the halfway point of their travels in the competition, they are now making their way to destinations ever further and more unknown. From the cobblestone streets of Romania, journeying through rural China, the participants are now faced with yet another challenging leg of their journey. In episode 5, the teams are tasked with venturing from the small town of Huangyao in China to the tropical paradise island of Koh Rong in Cambodia.
The five teams are put to the test as they must figure out the best way to make their way to their destination without using airplanes. All five teams start off on even footing as they board a local bus to travel to the drop-off point where they must then decide the best method of travel to get to the small port where boats are ready to take them to Koh Rong. The travel options are either by motorcycle, public bus, or private car, each method having different costs, risks, and benefits that can greatly affect the pace and the emotional state of the participant.
As the teams travel through the crowded Chinese roadsides, they experience the throngs of people, traffics, curious locals, and unexpected obstacles that can slow them down or cause them to lose their way. The participants had to rely on their street smarts and communicate with locals to successfully find their way to the ferry port on time. While some teams have figured out the most efficient route, others have had to deal with perilous roads and even a flat tire.
As the teams reach the ferry port, they re-group to plan for their next challenge. The ferry to Koh Rong only runs on certain days and the teams must aim to catch the soonest ferry possible, or they risk spending the night in the port. The teams utilize different strategies to secure their spots for the ride, with some teams opting to pay for private speedboat charters to get to the island quicker than the ferry.
Once on the island, the teams are in awe as they witness the beautiful, pristine beaches and waters that surround them. With a total of $18 per day to spend, they are faced with finding reasonably priced accommodations and food to survive the next few days. There are no set checkpoints for this leg of the race, but to add some twists, the producers have imposed detours and challenges along the way that require the teams to demonstrate different skills and test their character under pressure.
The participants face challenges that require them to transport heavy bags up steep hills and search for a scavenger hunt while travelling around the island. These challenges are physically and mentally taxing, and require the teams to push themselves beyond their limits to complete them. With tensions rising between teammates and the pressure to perform, each individual must find their own source of motivation to continue pushing forward.
Overall, this episode proves to be one of the most difficult yet as the teams must rely on their instincts and resilience to overcome the challenges in their way. The scenic views of the island battles against the mental and physical demands of the test, and the episode aptly portrays the difficulty of what it means to race across the world. Will all five teams make it out of this leg unscathed? Tune in to find out.
