In episode 4 of The Most Dangerous Ways To School season 2, we are taken to Ethiopia, a country with a long and storied history, but also one that suffers from high poverty and a lack of educational opportunities. For many children in rural areas, attending school means traversing treacherous terrain and facing extreme danger.

We follow the journey of two young boys, Belay and Melkam, as they set out on their daily trek to school. The boys, aged 10 and 12 respectively, live in a remote Ethiopian village and must walk over 30km each way to attend their school in the nearest town. This 60km round trip is something that they must do every day, rain or shine, if they are to receive an education.

Their journey takes them across rugged mountains, through river valleys and over rocky outcrops. The land is unforgiving, and there are no properly constructed roads or bridges in this part of Ethiopia. The boys must scramble across boulders, cling to precipitous ledges and ford remote streams just to arrive at school on time. This journey is incredibly arduous, taking up to six hours each way, and is something that most children in the developed world would never have to endure.

Along the way, we meet other children who are also making this perilous journey to school. Some are walking alone, while others are in groups. They are all carrying heavy bags filled with books and supplies, which only adds to the difficulty of their journey.

The film explores the challenges that these children face, and how they overcome them. Along the way, we see the ingenuity and resourcefulness that the children use to make their way to school. For example, we see how the boys use long, thin branches to balance themselves as they cross a rickety rope bridge over a chasm.

Despite the dangers, the children are determined to receive an education. Indeed, for them, education is the key to a better future. They know that if they want to have a chance at improving their lives, they must have an education. They are passionate about learning and are grateful for the small opportunities they have been given.

The Most Dangerous Ways To School season 2 episode 4 gives us a glimpse into the lives of some of the world's most disadvantaged children. It is a stark reminder of the challenges that so many people around the world face in trying to access education, and a testament to their determination and resilience.
