In Thieves of the Wood season 1 episode 2, we continue to follow the story of Flemish highwayman Jan de Lichte as he and his gang attempt to evade capture and outsmart the corrupt authorities of 18th century Flanders.
The second episode opens with Jan and his crew still on the run from the police, who are hot on their trail after a botched robbery. In order to lay low and avoid detection, the gang takes refuge in a nearby village. There, they meet a group of local farmers who are being exploited and oppressed by a wealthy landowner, Baron de Voldenburg.
Jan sees an opportunity to strike back at the corrupt elites who have been taking advantage of the common people. He offers to help the farmers by stealing from the Baron and redistributing the stolen goods to the villagers. However, not all of Jan's gang members are on board with this plan, as they fear it could draw unwanted attention to them and make it even harder to elude the authorities.
As tensions rise among the gang, Jan must decide whether to move forward with his plan or abandon it in favor of a more cautious approach. Meanwhile, the police are closing in and it's only a matter of time before they catch up with the outlaws.
Throughout the episode, we see glimpses of Jan's backstory and learn more about what led him to become a highwayman. We also get a closer look at the political and social context of the time, as the show explores themes of class warfare, corruption, and resistance.
Overall, Thieves of the Wood season 1 episode 2 is an exciting and suspenseful installment in the series, as Jan and his gang continue to navigate the dangerous world of 18th century Flanders and fight for justice against all odds.
