Travel Man: 48 Hours in... is a British travel documentary series in which host Richard Ayoade takes viewers on whirlwind 48-hour trips around the world's most exciting destinations. Season 5 episode 1, titled "Rome," follows Richard as he explores the ancient city in just two days.
In this episode, Richard sets out to experience Rome's incredible history, architecture, and cuisine. He begins his trip by visiting the Colosseum, one of Rome's most iconic landmarks. Richard is fascinated by the 2,000-year-old gladiatorial arena and explores the underground tunnels where the fighters and animals were kept before battles. For an immersive experience, Richard even dresses up as a gladiator and takes part in a simulated fight.
Next, Richard visits the Vatican City, home to the Catholic Church and some of the world's most famous artworks. He tours the Vatican Museum and sees masterpieces like the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms. Richard also meets with a Swiss Guard, the colorful soldiers who protect the pope, and gets to wear the traditional uniform while learning about the guard's history and duties.
After getting his fill of art and history, Richard turns his attention to Rome's culinary delights. He visits the Testaccio Market, where he samples different types of pizza, pasta, and cured meats. Richard also tries the classic Italian dessert, tiramisu, and discovers the history behind the dish's name. He then has a cooking lesson from an Italian chef and learns how to make an authentic carbonara from scratch.
Richard's Rome adventure isn't complete without a night out on the town. He explores Rome's charming Trastevere neighborhood, where he learns about the local customs and traditions. Richard visits a traditional wine bar and tries different types of Italian wines, including the popular prosecco and the little-known Frascati. He also joins in the Italian practice of aperitivo, where locals gather to enjoy drinks and snacks before dinner.
The next day, Richard takes a stroll around the beautiful Villa Borghese gardens, where he visits the Galleria Borghese museum. There, he sees incredible artworks like the sculptures of Bernini and ancient Roman mosaics. Richard also tries his hand at rowing in a rented boat on the lake in the middle of the park.
Before leaving Rome, Richard stops by the Pantheon, one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings in the city. He marvels at the 2,000-year-old dome and the massive hole in the roof that lets in natural light. Richard also learns the fascinating story behind the building's conversion to a Christian church.
In just 48 hours, Richard experiences the best that Rome has to offer: from the ancient ruins of the Colosseum to the breathtaking artworks of the Vatican City, from the delicious food to the charming neighborhoods.
