In the fourth episode of the fifth season of Travel Man, host Richard Ayoade travels to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, for a 48-hour adventure filled with Scandinavian surprises. Richard is joined by comedian and actor Rob Delaney as they explore the city's rich history, unique culture, and stunning beauty.
The episode begins with Richard and Rob visiting the iconic Vasa Museum, which houses a 17th-century warship that sank in the Stockholm harbor and was salvaged after 333 years. Richard and Rob are awed by the sheer size and craftsmanship of the ship and learn about its tragic history. They also take a ride on the museum's simulator to experience what it was like to be a sailor on the Vasa.
Next, Richard and Rob experience the Swedish way of life by visiting the city's many markets. They start with Östermalmshallen, a high-end food hall where they sample traditional Swedish delicacies and learn about the country's food traditions. They then head to the trendy Södermalm district, where they visit a flea market and stop by a vintage shop to try on some retro outfits.
No trip to Stockholm is complete without a visit to the Old Town, or Gamla Stan. Richard and Rob explore the narrow cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, and even take a quick dip in the freezing waters of the Baltic Sea. They also stop by the Royal Palace, the official residence of the Swedish monarchy, to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
As the sun sets, Richard and Rob embark on a unique experience – a guided kayak tour of the city's canals and waterways. They paddle past some of Stockholm's most famous landmarks, including the City Hall and the infamous prison island of Långholmen.
The following day, Richard and Rob visit the Fotografiska Museum, dedicated to contemporary photography. They view the work of Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm and learn about the many ways in which photography can capture and reflect modern life.
The final stop on their whirlwind tour of Stockholm is the ABBA Museum, a tribute to the world-famous pop group. Richard and Rob immerse themselves in the ABBA experience, singing along to their favorite hits, trying on costumes, and even recording their own music video.
Throughout the episode, Richard and Rob offer their trademark humor and insight, as well as their impressions of Sweden's unique culture. They sample local cuisine, admire the city's beautiful architecture, and even attempt some Swedish phrases.
Overall, the episode showcases the best of Stockholm in just 48 hours, proving that the city is well worth a visit – even if you're short on time.
