In the year 1930, three men traveled into the unexplored mountains of Papua New Guinea looking for gold. Instead, they found one million people living in the mountains and valleys that were thought to be uninhabited. First Contact is about the members of this unknown civilization and the people who discovered it. Filmmakers interviewed members of the exploring party and some of the people they met. These interviews, set over footage taken during the gold miners' trip, show the dichotomy between the world views of European settlers and the native inhabitants.
First Contact is a 1983 documentary with a runtime of 58 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.7.
