New 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Trailer...Rises! (Watch it Here!)
by Scott Nye
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" has taken a lot of hits online for, of all things, that title. I suspect it's the use of "of the" twice. Turns people off. But every "Planet of the Apes" movie has had the whole phrase in there!
"Beneath the Planet of the Apes"? "Escape From the Planet of the Apes"? Even "Conquest of the Planet of the Apes" got away with the "of the" twice. Plus they all seem like fundamentally silly movies. I don't know, I still haven't seen them.
Well the trailer for the latest sure is silly in the most glorious way possible. For those who don't know, this is a prequel (they're all the rage these days) looking back at how the race of super-intelligent apes was born.
And while the trailer still calls some of that into question (like how did all the other apes get smart? Was it that part where the main ape throws the gas down the hall? If so, didn't it take him weeks to get to his level?), it provides more than enough the tickle the average summer blockbuster fan's fancy.
The CGI characters look pretty remarkable, James Franco is just off his rocker enough, and by the time the apes get revolting, I'm onboard. Sure it leans pretty heavy on the whole "man's ambition leads to global catastrophe" angle, but so does every sci-fi movie. Apparently a lot of the stuff towards the end of the trailer pretty much gives away the third act, but it is called "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." What do you really expect?
Here you go. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" comes out August 5th, providing the cap on the summer of endless blockbusters.
