Gilbert Gottfried Fired for Lame Tsunami Jokes. Wanted: New Voice for Alfac Duck

Gilbert Gottfried, the former voice of the parrot in Aladdin, can add another has-been to his repertoire. After a series of insensitive jokes about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Gottfried has been fired from his post as the voice of Alfac’s duck.

The Hollywood Reporter took note of his “mean spirited” tweets at a point when the death toll had hit around 3,000.

"Japan is really advanced. They don't go to the beach. The beach comes to them," Gottfried tweeted.

Another one said, "Japan called me. They said "maybe those jokes are a hit in the US, but over here, they're all sinking."

After a flutter of outrage, in which Gottfried was even called an expletive, Aflac announced that Gottfried would no longer represent the company.

As the Hollywood Reporter reports, Aflac does almost 75% of its business in Japan. In addition to donating $100 million to disaster relief, the company will hold a nationwide casting call to find a new voice of the iconic Aflac Duck.

"Gilbert's recent comments about the crisis in Japan were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac," Aflac Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Michael Zuna said in a statement Monday. "There is no place for anything but compassion and concern during these difficult times."
