'Full Metal Joust' Reality Competition Coming to The History Channel
by Morgan Glennon
There are a lot of reality competitions currently on television. At any time you can watch people compete to be the best chef, fashion designer or dog groomer. If there is a profession that can even marginally be used in a competitive setting there is a reality show somewhere on the dial for your enjoyment.
Now, apparently, the profession doesn't even have to be from this century, with The History Channel's new reality competition show "Full Metal Joust".
That's right. Jousting. If you've ever watched a show like "Top Chef" and thought to yourself, "Man this show would be a lot better if this competition could result in actual death, not just wine throwing," then boy are you in luck!
Clearly capitalizing on the popularity of shows like HBO's "Game of Thrones" the show will pit 16 contestants against each other in medieval jousts. The winner will leave the show with the $100,000 dollar grand prize, the knowledge that they are the best jouster on reality television and hopefully all of their limbs.
Having watched the gratuitously bloody "Game of Thrones" scene in which a wooden jousting rod ends up shoved into a knight's neck, I can see nothing going wrong with this plan.
"Jousting has been around a very, very long time and we're just now bringing it back. We're pulling this out of the Renaissance fairs and putting it back to what it originally was: a extreme sport," Executive Producer Craig Piligian says in the video preview.
The preview video bills the show as 'Medieval goes modern' and stressed the dangers of riders on 2,000 pound horses going at each other at 30 miles per hour.
"The very first joust that happens in the first episode they're going to go 'what the f&*k was that?'', Piligan said.
Sounds like I found my new favorite show! If you're interested in proving your jousting prowess the show is still casting until July 23rd.
