This comprehensive documentary film chronicles the long and storied history of American cinema and features famed crime thriller director, Martin Scorsese as the host and presenter. The film was created and produced by the BFI (the British Film Institute) and primarily focuses on what are generally considered touchstones of the cinematic world, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Scarlet Street by Fritz Lang.

The film is broken up into segments each of which focus on directors of a particular type, the main types of director's featured are, in order of appearance, the storyteller, the illusionist, the smuggler (or subversive) and the iconoclast.
