Watch Affectionately Known As Alex

Affectionately Known as Alex is a 2008 documentary about the xenophobic violence that took place in the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg, South Africa that year. The film examines the violence by natives of Alexandra against foreigners from Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi. The film looks at the economic tensions, political unrest and anti-foreigner rhetoric that lead to the attacks and also the aftermath. Themes of nationalism, immigration and the breakdown of the rule of law are explored.
