This biopic fictionalizes the life story of rapper Tupac Shakur, who was killed in a shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. The film chronicles Shakur's rise as a rapper in New York, his imprisonment for sexual assault, his superstardom as an artist on the Death Row record label, and his murder in a drive-by shooting at the height of his career. The film begins as a documentary filmmaker interviews Shakur in prison in 1995, where the rapper is serving time for sexual assault. The interview serves as a frame for a fictionalized retelling of Shakur's life story. The story focuses on Shakur's early home life, his time at a Baltimore arts high school, and his rise a rap superstar just as the musical genre is beginning to get mainstream attention. Despite Shakur's fame and fortune, he remains immersed in a dangerous lifestyle. In addition to his rape conviction, he is embroiled in a rivalry between the East and West Coast hip hop communities. He is shot during an apparent robbery in 1994, and he recovers before being fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in 1996. All Eyez on Me was released in 2017 to generally negative reviews from critics. Reviewers were not impressed with the film's writing and plot, which they said did not live up to the quality of Shakur's own writing. Audiences had generally more positive reactions to the film, and it was modestly successful during its theatrical run in the summer of 2017.
