Antikiller is a Russian action-movie from 2002, directed by Egor Konchalovsky. The movie follows the story of a former police officer, Major Korenev (Gosha Kutsenko), who is forced to become a hitman after refusing to go along with corrupt superiors in his department. The title, Antikiller, is a nickname given to Korenev, which translates as "anti-killer," or one who aims to stop violent individuals in society.

The movie starts with Korenev's brutal killing of a notorious criminal, called "The Egyptian," who was responsible for the death of Korenev's wife and child. After this incident, Korenev quits his job as a police officer and is recruited by a powerful businessman, Ryabovsky (Mikhail Ulyanov).

Ryabovsky is initially wary of Korenev but quickly realizes his potential as a hitman. He uses Korenev to take down his rivals in the criminal underworld, and Korenev quickly gains a reputation as one of the most effective killers in the field. However, Korenev remains tormented by his past, haunted by the memories of his wife and child, and becomes increasingly disillusioned with his work.

As the movie progresses, Korenev becomes increasingly involved in Ryabovsky's business affairs, uncovering a network of corruption that operates within his organization. He meets Anna (Maria Mashkova), a young woman who works for one of Ryabovsky's associates, and the two develop a romantic relationship. Anna becomes a key player in the movie's plot, providing an emotional counterpart to the violence and bloodshed that dominates the rest of the narrative.

The movie's climax takes place in a stunning showdown between Korenev and Ryabovsky, in which Korenev finally confronts his demons and sides with the law. It's a satisfying conclusion to a film that explores themes of corruption, violence, and redemption.

One of the most striking things about Antikiller is how it combines the gritty realism of a crime drama with the stylish action of an adrenaline-pumping thriller. The movie's cinematography is impressive, with high-speed car chases and intense gunfire sequences that keep viewers on the edge of their seats. At the same time, the film's slow-burning plot is well-developed, and its characters are complex and multi-dimensional.

Another aspect that sets Antikiller apart is its portrayal of justice and morality. The protagonist Korenev is a compelling character, struggling to balance his sense of duty with his personal feelings. By the end of the film, Korenev makes a difficult decision, choosing to do what's right, even if it means sacrificing his own safety and livelihood. This aspect of the movie gives it a powerful emotional weight and elevates it above standard action fare.

Overall, Antikiller is an excellent movie that is well worth watching for fans of the genre. Its combination of heart-pumping action and engaging storytelling, combined with a complex and relatable protagonist, make it a standout example of 21st century Russian cinema.
