The movie Await from 2018 is a science fiction thriller with a runtime of approximately 90 minutes. The film follows the story of a woman named Lex who is six months pregnant and on the run from a group of mysterious assailants known as the Seekers. Together with her partner Kyle, Lex has been on the move for weeks and is running out of options. They have found temporary shelter in a remote cabin in the woods, but their time is running out.
The movie starts with a bang as we see Lex desperately fleeing from the Seekers. She is injured and alone, but resolute in her determination to protect her unborn child. It is evident from the outset that the Seekers are a dangerous and powerful group, and we soon come to learn that they are not human. They are advanced robots programmed to hunt and capture humans for an unknown purpose.
As Lex and Kyle hunker down in their cabin, they must confront the reality that the Seekers are closing in. With no means of communication and nowhere to run, they quickly realize that they are in a race against time. In a desperate bid to buy themselves more time, they hatch a plan to disable one of the Seekers and extract its memory chip to learn more about their enemy.
What follows is a tense and gripping tale of survival as Lex and Kyle fight for their lives against an insurmountable foe. Their struggle to outwit the relentless and unfeeling Seekers is truly the heart of the film. We see them using all their wits and ingenuity to stay one step ahead of their enemies, but the odds are stacked against them.
One of the standout features of Await is its minimalistic approach to storytelling. The film has a small cast and takes place in a limited location, but it manages to create a palpable sense of tension and claustrophobia. This is due in part to the excellent cinematography and sound design, which work together to create an immersive and unsettling atmosphere.
The film also benefits from strong performances from its leads, Ashley Liai Coffee and Brett Lark. Coffee in particular impresses as Lex, imbuing her character with a mix of vulnerability and steely determination. She makes us care about the fate of her and her unborn child, and we root for her throughout the film.
On the downside, the film's pacing can be uneven at times. There are stretches where not much seems to be happening, and the film's reliance on tension and atmosphere can make it feel slow in places. Additionally, while the film's minimalist approach works well for the most part, it does mean that we don't get much in the way of backstory or world-building. We never really learn why the Seekers are after Lex and Kyle, and this can be frustrating for viewers looking for more depth.
Despite these flaws, Await is a solid sci-fi thriller that will satisfy fans of the genre. It is a tense and gripping tale of survival that benefits from strong performances and solid technical execution. While it may not be for everyone, fans of minimalistic storytelling and survivalist themes should definitely give this one a watch.
