Babymother is a 1998 British film directed by Julian Henriques and written by Stephen Bourne. Set in London's bustling and diverse Brixton district, the film tells the story of a young woman named Anita (played by Anjela Lauren Smith) who dreams of becoming a reggae star. Although she has a young daughter named Tanya, Anita is determined to pursue her passion and make something of herself.

The film opens with Anita performing on stage at a local club, where she catches the eye of a handsome musician named Byron (Wil Johnson). Despite their obvious attraction to each other, the two get off to a rocky start when Anita discovers that Byron already has a baby with another woman. Despite this, they eventually begin a relationship and Anita becomes pregnant with their child.

As Anita prepares for the birth of her second child, she struggles to balance her dreams of a music career with her responsibilities as a mother. She also faces pressure from her family, who disapprove of her relationship with Byron, and from her ex-boyfriend, who is determined to win her back.

Throughout the film, we see Anita navigate the ups and downs of motherhood, relationships, and career aspirations. She faces numerous setbacks, including opposition from a record label executive who tells her that reggae music is not marketable. However, with the support of Byron and her friends, Anita refuses to give up on her dreams.

Babymother is a beautifully shot and richly textured film that captures the vibrant energy of Brixton and the diverse communities that call it home. The film features a strong cast of actors, including Caroline Chikezie as Anita's best friend Estelle and Don Warrington as her strict and disapproving father.

At its core, Babymother is a story about the challenges and triumphs of single motherhood, as well as the power of music to bring people together. The film's soundtrack, which features a mix of reggae, R&B, and hip-hop, is a highlight and adds to the film's overall energy and authenticity.

Overall, Babymother is a touching and inspiring film that celebrates the resilience and determination of women like Anita, who refuse to be defined by societal expectations and strive to create a better future for themselves and their children.
