Filmed against the panorama of the Utah mountains, the tale has something to say about vigilantism in the year 1876 as seen through the eye of a boy. Billy Baker (Lee H. Montgomery- Burnt Offerings). Billy's father (Clint Walker), stands up against those in his hometown who would take the law into their own hands thereby risks ostracism and economic hardships for himself and his family. Billy's fears and frustrations find an outlet in a small red-tailed hawk that he rescues from the jaws of a fox. Along with a secretive hermit (Burl Ives), they nurse the hawk and train it to become a proud hunting bird. The story is a warm saga that captures the heart of a father-son relationship and depicts how people sometimes hate and fear those who are "different."
