Better Luck Tomorrow is a dark drama that features the seemingly placid life of Ben, an Asian-American teen pursuing his studies in a quiet fashion. Underneath the surface, however, Ben and his friends are not the law-abiding, over-achieving students they appear to be. Ben’s life is precariously balanced between studying for his college entrance exams and committing small acts of petty vandalism with his friends, Virgil and Han. As the story begins, Ben is attracted to Stephanie, a student of Asian descent who is adopted into a white family. Stephanie is dating Steve, who is arrogant and comes from a wealthy family. Ben’s current way to relieve stress and pick up extra money is to buy computers and return them, but soon his activities escalate to things like stealing the test answers for standardized tests and stealing computer equipment from the school. Ben falls progressively deeper into the circle of crime that is headed up by Daric, the school’s valedictorian. Ben’s group of friends becomes progressively more wild, taking part in drinking parties and other risky behaviors, all the while keeping up their facade of being model minority Asian-American students. Ben starts to realize that his life is out of control, but by the time that he makes this realization, it might already be too late. At this point, his life has already spiraled out of control, as he and his circle of friends have degenerated to selling drugs, among other activities. Ben must decide whether the high he receives from his risky behavior is worth the consequences of his actions. Better Luck Tomorrow has taken several prizes in various film festivals. In 2003, it was a Grand Jury Prize Nomination and an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival, and it was also an Official Selection at the Toronto International Film Festival in the same year. In 2004, it received a John Cassavetes Award Nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards.
