Bidaay Byomkesh is a Bengali film released in 2018 which is directed by Debaloy Bhattacharya. The story is based on the popular detective character of Bengali literature, Byomkesh Bakshi, created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The film marks the fifth installment of the Byomkesh film franchise. The movie is set in Kolkata, in the 1970s. The main protagonist, Byomkesh Bakshi (played by Rahul Banerjee), is still coping with the death of his wife, Satyabati. He becomes involved in a case with his friend and writer, Ajit (played by Rupankar Bagchi), who asks him to investigate the disappearance of his college friend's daughter. Byomkesh, who's become a recluse after his wife's death, agrees to take the case, even though Ajit tells him that there's hardly any hope of finding the girl.

As Byomkesh begins his investigation, he realizes that the case is much more complicated than what he had originally thought. The disappeared girl, Aritra (played by Sohini Sarkar), has a secret connection to the notorious underworld don of Kolkata, Akash Mukherjee (played by Joy Sengupta). Byomkesh soon uncovers a complex web of lies and deceit, as he tries to connect the missing Aritra to Mukherjee.

Along with Byomkesh and Ajit, the movie features a few other key characters. Bidipta Chakraborty plays the role of Shiuli, a close acquaintance of Aritra's family, and Soumyajit Majumdar plays the role of Aritra's father. Other notable actors like Arindol Bagchi, Kaushik Sen, and Sujan Mukhopadhyay are also part of the film.

The film is a dark thriller with a distinct film noir feel. The cinematography, done by Subhankar Bhar and Gopi Bhagat, is impressive, and the use of lighting and shadows add to the mood of the film. The background score by Bickram Ghosh is haunting, and it complements the overall atmosphere of the movie.

Rahul Banerjee, who plays the lead role of Byomkesh, delivers a riveting performance. He successfully portrays the complexities of the character, the grief of the loss of his wife, and the intense focus of a detective. Rupankar Bagchi, as Ajit, is brilliant, and he brings a sense of humor and lightness to the film. Bidipta Chakraborty, as always, delivers a powerful performance as Shiuli, who becomes a key player in unraveling the mystery.

The film also deals with societal issues like the nexus between the police and the criminal underworld, the callousness of the privileged class, and the violence against marginalized groups. These issues are subtly woven into the narrative, and they add a depth to the movie.

Overall, Bidaay Byomkesh is an engaging and well-made thriller that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The film succeeds in recreating the world of Byomkesh Bakshi, the legendary Indian detective, and it does so with finesse. The film is a must-watch for people who enjoy crime thrillers and detective stories.
