Starting in the prehistoric Jōmon period in Japan, then documenting the influence of Noh and Kagura Theater, myth and festivals, the film follows the development of character in the Kagoshima rice god, tanokansa. The third part of the film describes the loss of personality traits historically ascribed to tanokansa before exploring modern attempts at preserving this ancient model of character.
