Easter Island, isolated in the Pacific Ocean, is a large volcanic rock best known for its giant stones erected on huge altars. But it remains an enigma. Why did the island's forest disappear? Why have the giant statues been toppled? And why did the quarry they came from seem to have been abandoned overnight? For some scientists, this ecological tragedy is what lies in store for us if we don't take care of our environment. However, since 2000, teams of experts in various disciplines have searched under the surface of the island, trying to understand what happened. Each dig brings new discoveries and surprises that allow us today to begin a new history of Easter Island that's very different from the commonly accepted disaster scenario.
