This period drama is set in the Victorian era, a time when members of high society admired an abundance of art, painting and cultural offerings, yet were too repressed to openly discuss passion, gay marriage and sexuality. Effie Gray is a young woman coming of age during this time of emotional conflict. John Ruskin is an art critic who marries Effie, a woman who, as she matures, strains against the contemporary convention of women remaining silent. The newlywed couple are soon scandalizing society when they enter into a love triangle with Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais.
