Encanto is a 2021 American computer-animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, Encanto tells the story of the Madrigals, an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto.

The film follows Mirabel, a young girl who is the only ordinary member of her family as she struggles to find her place within the Madrigal family. Every child in the Madrigal family is blessed with a unique magical gift except Mirabel which causes her to feel like an outsider in her own home. Mirabel's grandmother Alma is the matriarch who keeps the magic of the Encanto alive.

When Mirabel discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, she decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might be her exceptional family's last hope. She goes on a journey to save her magical home and bring her family back together. Along the way, Mirabel comes to terms with her own power and uncovers hidden truths about her family's past.

The film features the voice talents of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, María Cecilia Botero as Abuela Alma, John Leguizamo as Bruno, Diane Guerrero as Isabela, and more. The music of Encanto was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda who infused the score with Colombian rhythms and instruments. The soundtrack features original songs sung by the cast including "Surface Pressure," "What Else Can I Do?" and the breakout hit "We Don't Talk About Bruno."

With its magical realism storytelling, vibrant animation, memorable musical numbers, and themes of family, Encanto was praised by critics for its representation of Colombian culture. The setting of the hidden magical Encanto village in the mountains of Colombia provides a unique and culturally-rich backdrop. Details from Colombian culture are woven throughout from the clothing to the food to the music and language.

Encanto explores complex emotional themes of intergenerational family dynamics, perfectionism, self-acceptance, and living up to expectations. The core of the story is about finding your inner strength, standing up for what's right, and the importance of family. Even without a magical gift of her own, Mirabel discovers her inner power and courage to protect her family and community.

With resonant themes, catchy music, striking visuals, and lovable characters, Encanto became a surprise hit for Disney Animation upon its November 2021 release. It charmed audiences of all ages as both a musical adventure for children and an emotional story tackling mature themes for adults. The film garnered critical acclaim and would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Encanto invites viewers into the magical Casa Madrigal for a heartwarming tale about the bonds of family. Through the eyes of the earnest heroine Mirabel, the film explores themes of embracing your authentic self and the sacrifices family members make for each other.
