Explore China is an educational documentary movie that takes viewers on a journey through the diverse culture, natural landmarks, and bustling cities of China. Created by the visionary nonprofit organization, Explore.org, the film is hosted by Charles Annenberg Weingarten, alongside renowned wildlife photographer Wen Bo, who also serves as a guide throughout the trip.
The movie begins in Beijing, the capital of China, where Charles and Wen explore some of the historical landmarks of the city, such as the famous Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, and the Temple of Heaven. As they travel through the city, they also engage with locals and learn about the contemporary culture of the city, including traditional dance, music, and food.
The tour then ventures into the scenic countryside, where viewers are offered a breathtaking view of China's natural beauty, including the majestic Mountains of Guilin, the pristine waters of the Li River, and the breathtaking Yangshuo countryside. During their journey, Charles and Wen connect with local people and learn about their customs and traditions, including the significant role of the river in the life of the Chinese people.
The journey continues to Yunnan Province, a melting pot of diverse ethnic cultures, where the crew engages with the vibrant traditions of the Hani people, as recognised by UNESCO. They also get up close with endangered animals, such as the Chinese river dolphin, and learn about the efforts of conservationists to protect endangered species.
The documentary also takes us to the giant panda conservation centre, where viewers can witness the care that goes into preserving the national treasure of China. The centre provides refuge for giant pandas in need and serves as a home for research on their behaviour, breeding habits, and habitat requirements.
As the journey proceeds, Charles and Wen discover the mountainous province of Sichuan, known for its spicy cuisine and beautiful tea fields. They visit Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, where they discover the best street eats and engage with street vendors. They also witness face-changing and hear from one of the masters who shares some of the secrets of the art form.
The journey wraps up at the bustling financial hub of Shanghai, where the crew discovers one of China's busiest cities, home to modern high-sky skyscrapers that contrast sharply with ancient temples and classical gardens. Viewers learn how Shanghai transformed from a humble fishing town to one of the most important cultural and economic cities in China in just a century.
Building on the team's journey through China, this documentary is a must-watch for anyone who wants to experience the hidden charm and diversity of modern China. With gorgeous landscapes, treasured history, cultural heritage, and vibrant modern cities, Explore China will leave viewers with a deep appreciation for China that they will never forget.
