The Fairey Delta 2 was a British supersonic aircraft. On October 6, 1954, it conducted its maiden flight, flown by test pilot Peter Twiss. It was the first jet aircraft to exceed 1,000 mph. And on March 10, 1956, it set a new world speed record of 1,132 mph. The Delta 2 held the absolute World Air Speed Record for over a year.
