Flight of Black Angel is an action thriller released in 1991 that follows Lieutenant Colonel Matt Ryan (Peter Strauss), a former Air Force pilot who is now teaching at the United States Air Force Academy. One day, while he is flying a training mission with a group of cadets, he witnesses the crash of a civilian plane in the mountains nearby. Without hesitation, he decides to investigate the crash site, and what he finds there will unleash a chain of events that will put him in the middle of an international terrorist plot to start a war between the US and the Soviet Union.

Peter Strauss delivers a solid performance as a tough and uncompromising pilot who is not afraid to challenge authority and defy conventional wisdom to achieve his goals. He brings a level of intensity and determination to the role that makes his character believable and sympathetic. William O'Leary and James O'Sullivan play two of the cadets who accompany Ryan on his mission, and they both deliver convincing performances as well. They add a touch of humor and youthful energy to the movie, which helps to balance the more serious and dramatic moments.

The plot of the movie is fast-paced and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns along the way. The action sequences are well-choreographed and suspenseful, with several aerial dogfights that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The movie also features some impressive special effects, especially considering its age, that help to bring the action to life.

One of the highlights of the movie is its exploration of the relationship between Ryan and his former commanding officer, Colonel Semak (Donald Moffat). Semak is a hard-nosed career officer who clashes with Ryan's unconventional methods and willingness to take risks. However, as the movie progresses, the two men come to respect each other's abilities and form an unlikely alliance to stop the terrorists.

Flight of Black Angel also has some interesting things to say about the Cold War and the state of international politics in the early 1990s. The movie portrays a world in which tensions between the US and the Soviet Union are at an all-time high, and in which a single misstep could spark a global conflict. This backdrop adds an extra layer of tension to the story and makes the stakes feel much higher.

Overall, Flight of Black Angel is a well-made and entertaining action thriller that should appeal to fans of the genre. It features strong performances, exciting action sequences, and a thought-provoking plot that will keep viewers engaged from beginning to end. While it may not be a classic of the genre, it certainly deserves a place among the better action movies of the early 1990s.
