Fool's Gold is a romantic comedy about a couple of treasure hunters whose marriage has fallen apart due to failed attempts to find the Aralia. The film begins with Tess awaiting her husband Finn's arrival at their divorce hearing. Sadly, he arrives too late to stop it as she is granted a divorce one minute before he walks in. Tess is awarded their boat, the only property they share of real value, and Finn finds himself in big trouble, as he explains to her that his shenanigans have once again cost them both. The boat is half burned, destroyed, and sitting at the bottom of the ocean.
Tess, who wants desperately to return to grad school, has taken a job as a steward on billionaire Nigel Honeycutt's yacht. The yacht is anchored near the Florida Keys as they await the arrival of Honeycutt's daughter, Gemma. Finn, spotting the yacht from the local bar, becomes determined to get onboard. He is in a world of trouble with Big Bunny D, a rapper and crook, to whom Finn is financially indebted. Finn finds the opening he needs, as Gemma loses her hat while in reroute to the yacht.
Honeycutt welcomes Finn onboard and discovers the connection between Finn and Tess. After a series of hostilities, Finn enlightens Nigel and Gemma about the shipwreck, Aralia. Tess, of course, interjects and they both complete the tale. Nigel in turn offers his financial assistance for the treasure-hunting venture. They soon discover Big Bunny D owns the portion of the ocean in which the Aralia sits, and he has hired Finn's former partner, Moe to recover the treasure.
Finn and Tess follow a series of clues hoping to find the treasure. The journey leads them into familiar places where their love blossomed. It is apparent that the flame has been rekindled, as the ship that tore them apart may, in fact, bring them back together.
