Teddy Roosevelt's patrician reforms, Henry Ford's well-paid automobile assembly workers, and pacifist Wilson's intervention in World War I are a few examples of the contradictory signs of a country moving toward uncertain new freedoms. Women marched until they got the vote. New civil liberties emerged while others were suppressed. Booming economic prosperity lasted until 1929, when the crash threatened everyone's freedom.
