The Global Treasures series showcases some of the most precious cultural, historical and architectural treasures from around the world. In this edition, we explore the Ming Dynasty Tombs, located in China, where the emperors and their consorts were buried. The Ming Dynasty ruled China for nearly 300 years, from 1368 to 1644. During this time, they built a series of elaborate tombs for their deceased emperors, which became known as the Ming Tombs. The tombs are located in a valley surrounded by mountains and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Ming Tombs consist of 13 imperial mausoleums built between the years 1409 and 1644. These tombs are spread over an area of 120 square kilometers, with each tomb having its own unique design and place for burial. The tombs were constructed according to the principles of feng shui, and their placement, orientation, and layout were carefully chosen to align with the natural elements and bring good luck.
One of the most spectacular tombs is that of the Emperor Yongle, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, who ruled from 1402 to 1424. Emperor Yongle's tomb is the largest and best-preserved of all the tombs. The tomb complex consists of three courtyards, each with a distinct purpose, and a burial chamber, which is located beneath a hill. The entrance to the tomb is guarded by a pair of monumental columns, which are carved with intricate designs of dragons and phoenixes.
Another tomb that is visited in the film is that of the Emperor Wanli, who reigned from 1572 to 1620. Emperor Wanli's tomb is unique because of its underground palace, which was constructed to accommodate not only the emperor but also his empress and his favorite concubines. The underground palace is decorated with exquisite frescoes and carvings depicting the emperor's life and accomplishments.
Throughout the film, we also learn about the history and cultural significance of the Ming Dynasty and its tombs. We learn about the artistic and architectural achievements of the dynasty, as well as its political and social developments. We discover how the Ming Tomb complex is a microcosm of the Ming Dynasty itself, and how the tombs are a testament to the power and legacy of China's greatest dynasty.
Overall, Global Treasures THE MING NECROPOLIS The Ming Dynasty Tombs China is a captivating and informative documentary that takes the viewer on a journey through one of China's most stunning cultural treasures.
