In the movie Godmothered, Jillian Bell plays a fairy godmother-in-training named Eleanor who is eager to prove herself in the world of magic. She receives a letter from a 10-year-old girl named Mackenzie who wishes for happiness and a happy ending. However, the letter is dated in the past and Eleanor believes that Mackenzie is still a child in need of a fairy godmother's help.

Despite being told that her services are no longer needed in the modern world, Eleanor sets out to find Mackenzie and help her achieve her happily ever after. Mackenzie, played by Isla Fisher, is now a 40-year-old single mother of two who has given up on the idea of true love and happily ever after. She works at a news station preparing obituaries, and her life seems dull and uninspiring.

Eleanor ends up finding Mackenzie and comically attempts to grant her wish, despite not fully understanding the modern era. She also struggles with the realization that perhaps fairy tales don't always have a happy ending, something she had never considered before. Mackenzie is initially skeptical of Eleanor's methods and is hesitant to believe in fairy tales, but as they spend more time together, Mackenzie begins to open up to the idea of magic and the possibility of a happy ending.

Throughout the course of the movie, Eleanor and Mackenzie face various obstacles, including an overbearing mother-in-law (played by Jane Curtin) and societal expectations of what a happy ending looks like. Along the way, they help each other navigate life's challenges and find happiness in unexpected ways.

The performances in the movie are delightful, with Jillian Bell delivering a hilarious and endearing performance as the clueless but well-meaning fairy godmother. June Squibb is also a standout as Eleanor's sassy and encouraging mentor. Sonia Manzano, known for her role as Maria on Sesame Street, plays a small but important role as Mackenzie's boss and friend.

The movie has a heartwarming message that encourages viewers to hold onto hope and believe in the possibility of a happy ending, even in the face of difficult circumstances. The themes of female empowerment and breaking free from societal expectations are also woven throughout the story, making it a great choice for a family movie night.

Overall, Godmothered is a charming and humorous take on the classic fairy tale, with a modern twist that makes it relevant for today's world. It's a feel-good movie that reminds us of the power of love, friendship, and a little bit of magic.

Godmothered is a 2020 kids & family movie. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1 and a MetaScore of 49.
