Watch God's Lair - Meteora & Metsovo
- 22 min
Meteora is a unique place in Europe. It is a holy place of Christian Orthodoxy, where monks and nuns are living, since hundreds of years ago, in monasteries perched on top of spectacular rock formations. The monasteries, 9 in total, where built on top of these rocks to defend them against the invaders and in times this strategy worked out well, the invaders leaving them alone and, during the lull between local wars, they were painted with remarkable frescos employing one of the best painters of the time. Among the curiosities inside are the nets that were used to lift the monks from the bottom of the rock formations, a not so secure way to travel, and old barrels used by the monks to make wine, even today. From Meteora we crossed the Pindus Mountains and we entered an archaic zone inhabited by a population named Vlachos, that speaks a language similar with Romanian, pigmented with Greek, Italian and Turkish words, who lived here from immemorial times guarding Katara mountain pass.
