Christmas Eve at the Gramercy Residence is a time to bring everyone together for a night of dancing. The film uses that occasion to introduce the three young people whose stories we follow: DORELL, who has come to Gramercy Residence after a lifetime in foster care in the South. This lovable young man has miraculously survived physical violence at the hands of a father who tried to "beat the gayness out of him.

JASMINE, whose foster family in Philadelphia could no longer handle their own confused feelings towards her. Born as Curtis, but always feeling that she is really a girl, she has recently identified herself as a transgender female and is preparing to step outside the safety of Gramercy in "my girl clothes" for the first time.

CARLOS, a moody self-taught poet, raised in a Bronx housing project and sent off to a juvenile boot camp at age twelve by his drug-addicted mother who he still longs to reunite with.
