Hi-Lo Joe is a British romantic drama film released in 2017. It chronicles the journey of Joe Ridley (Gethin Anthony) who returns to his hometown years after leaving for London. This is where he meets and falls in love with Alo (Jannik Archer), a nurse who cares for his ailing father. The two embark on a passionate and intense romance, but their love is threatened by Joe's troubled past and the secrets he hides from Alo.

The story begins with a sombre tone as we watch Joe struggle to come to terms with the death of his brother. He decides to leave London and return to his childhood home after numerous years of being away. He finds that not much has changed and he is welcomed back by his childhood friends. He quickly becomes acquainted with Alo, who is caring for his father, and they soon form a bond that blossoms into a passionate and intense love affair.

As the relationship between Joe and Alo deepens, we begin to see some of the demons that Joe has been fighting come to the surface. He is haunted by memories of his past, including a devastating incident that he has tried to move on from for years. He struggles with feelings of guilt, remorse and self-loathing, which threaten to tank his relationship with Alo. Despite this, Alo stands by him, offering him unwavering support and love.

In the midst of Joe's struggles, we are also introduced to his childhood friend, Tim (Tom Bateman), who is dealing with his own personal issues. Tim is struggling with addiction and trying to break free from the hold that drugs have over him. His friendship with Joe is tested to the limit as Joe tries to help him with his addiction, even as he grapples with his own problems.

Hi-Lo Joe is a deeply moving film that deals with the complexities of love, friendship and personal demons. It is a nuanced portrayal of the struggles that people go through in life and how they try to move past them. The cinematography is excellent, capturing the quiet beauty of the British countryside and the bleakness of Joe's internal struggles. The soundtrack of the film is equally compelling and adds to the mood of the film.

The performances of the lead actors are especially noteworthy. Gethin Anthony delivers a powerful performance as Joe, imbuing the character with a raw vulnerability that makes him easy to empathise with. Jannik Archer also shines as Alo, bringing to life a character that is filled with warmth, compassion and strength. Tom Bateman's portrayal of Tim is also impressive, capturing the desperation and hopelessness of addiction.

The film is not without its flaws, however. Some of the plot points feel contrived and predictable, and there are moments where the pacing drags. The depictions of drug addiction also feel a little clichéd and stereotyped at times.

Despite its flaws, Hi-Lo Joe is a film that is worth watching. It is a beautifully shot and acted film that deals with themes that are universal and relatable. It is a film that will make you feel a range of emotions, from sadness to hope, and leave you with a sense of catharsis. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
